C. T. Ravi speaks about importance of organic farming

Mangalore, Oct 8, 2012: Speaking at an agricultural awareness program held at Fisheries College of Mangalore, DK District-in-charge Minister C. T. Ravi said that the organic farming is slowly losing significance in society owing to the effects of modernization and globalization.

Further speaking about the problems facing farmers in modern times, he said that farmers hardly make a profit as they do not get the prices their products deserve in the market.

 

Organic farmer was the only thing farmers knew some forty to fifty years back, said Mr. Ravi, adding that farmers began turning to inorganic farming when the agriculture department began giving away chemical fertilizers at subsidized rates. Today, farmers claim that they cannot till their land without chemical fertilizers, he said.

He urged farmers to return to organic farming before the land becomes unfit for agriculture and turns barren. He also urged all concerned to give more importance to organic farming.

Deputy Speaker Yogish Bhat, Naveen Kumar, president of the standing committee for agriculture in the ZP; Vijayalakshmi Shetty, vice president of the Mangalore TP; Krishna Raj Hegde, president of the Mangalore Taluk Krishika Samaja; and others were also present.
