CPI (M) condemns caste discrimination in temples

Udupi, Jan 27, 2012 : The district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) organized a protest in front of Shri Krishna Mutt against the caste discrimination practiced in the mutt, as part of a statewide protest organized by its state unit on Jan 26 Thursday.

In his protest address, delivered on Ajjarkad Grounds at 11:00 a.m., G. V. Shriram Reddy, the state secretary, said that caste discrimination can be observed at temples all over the state. Since the CPI (M) believes in equality, it opposes caste system in all forms, he said.

Speaking about the attacks on minorities, he said that certain parties attempt to divert public attention from their wrongdoings by engineering such acts. He also remarked that, owing to blind beliefs, people become victims of caste discrimination, willing to sacrifice their dignity even to practice a ritual that requires them to roll over banana leaf plates discarded after meals by people belongs to the upper castes.

Condemning RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat’s alleged provocative speech, he said that Mr. Bhat ought to be imprisoned for delivering a speech that led communal violence.

Speaking on the occasion, C. N. Nagaraj, the chief secretary of the CPI (M), urged the state government to curb all social evils in Karnataka. Accusing the state government of attempting to divide the student community by introducing studies on the Bhagavad Gita in schools, he said that parties such as the BJP and organizations such as the RSS are walking along the path of destruction without understanding the virtues of Hinduism.


B. Madhav, the executive committee president of the state CPI (M), declared that the party will support and protect all those who are victims of caste discrimination.


K. Neela, the president of the CPI (M) women’s wing, said that the party takes the grievances of the working classes seriously irrespective of caste or religion.
