Mangalore, Feb 21, 2012: The CPI (M), local unit, organized a dharna in front of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), during which they demanded restoration of drinking water facilities to Tannirbhavi.
The protestors also submitted a memorandum to the commissioner of the MCC, in which they objected to the MCC’s decision to disconnect the drinking water line to Tannirbhavi.
According to the memorandum, the people of Tannirbhavi have been deprived of basic facilities for a long time and have not even benefited from the government’s welfare schemes. They have not even been given door numbers, which makes it very difficult for them to obtain basic civic amenities. The protestors also pointed out that the CPI (M) had protested against the plight of these people several times and has also submitted a memorandum to the district commissioner.
The MCC had disconnected water supply to Tannirbhavi on Feb 16 according to a directive issued by Linge Gowda, the executive engineer. The CPI (M) memorandum stated that this move is in direct opposition to the promise given by the joint commissioner who had stated that the problem will be discussed at the Water Adalat.
Among the protestors was Shameema Bhanu, the member of the Tannirbhavi Horata Samithi, and Sunil Kumar Bajal, along with members of the Dalita Hakkugala Samithi.
