Mangaluru, April 20, 2025: The Kankanady Town police have registered a case against three individuals for allegedly obstructing vehicular movement during a protest against the Waqf Amendment Act-2025. The protest, organized by the Ulama Coordination Karnataka, took place on Friday at Sha Garden in Adyar, Kannur.
City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal confirmed the incident, stating that the demonstration had initially been peaceful, with adequate police deployment to maintain order and ensure the smooth flow of traffic on National Highway-73. A large number of volunteers from the organizing body also assisted the police in managing the event.
However, at around 4:30 p.m., a section of the protesters reportedly moved onto the highway, blocking traffic and causing disruptions. Despite repeated appeals from the police to clear the road, the group continued to obstruct the movement of vehicles, including emergency services.
“Some protesters disregarded instructions and disrupted traffic, obstructed emergency services, and interfered with public officials performing their duties,” Agrawal said. Based on video footage and direct observations, the police identified three individuals involved in the incident: Jaleel, a resident of Krishnapura, Fazal, a resident of Valachil, and Mohammed Hanif Noufal.
A case has been registered against them at the Kankanady Town police station under various sections of the law, including sections 189(2), 126(2), 270, 324(4), 132, 285, and 190 of the BNS Act. Further investigations are underway, and the police are analyzing video evidence to identify other individuals responsible for the disruption.
“Strict legal action will be taken against all those involved,” the Commissioner added.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of adhering to public safety measures during protests to avoid such incidents in the future.
