Byndoor, Apr 15, 2012: The dairy farmers of Paduveri in Byndoor in Kundapur have so far lost 71 cows and many more cows dying. Cattle in Paduveri have been dying from the past 3 days.
Cows are dying in large numbers in Paduveri after eating dangerous chemical waste dumped on the Ottinene grounds, mostly used by dairy farmers to graze their cattle.
Paudveri has around 45 families and each family has a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 35 cows. Fifteen families have lost all their cattle so far. Venkataramana H., who had 20 cows, has lost 14 of them and the others are showing symptoms of poisoning.
Dr. Babanna Poojari and Dr. Nagaraj, veterinary officers from Hemmadi and Byndoor, say that they are providing symptomatic treatment because they do no know the poison that is killing the animals. They also say that post mortem has been conducted on a few cows and viscera have been sent to a forensic lab in Mangalore. The doctors have been successful in delaying the death of some cows, but not preventing death because they do no know the poison that is killing the cows. He also pointed out that only cattle left for grazing at Ottinene grounds are showing these symptoms.
Dr. Nagaraj said that some miscreants set fire to the waste dumped at Ottinene using petrol, owing to which the veterinary doctors have not been able to identify the chemical waste. Waste such as animal remains, saloon waste, rubber, blades, plastic, and others is dumped at the Ottinene site, he added.
