Mangalore, September 8:  The Feast of Blessing of New corns-Nativity of Our Lady ’Monthi Fest’ was celebrated with much pomp and colour, with hundreds of children and adults alike showering flowers on the statue of the Nativity of Mother Mary to mark the Birth Day of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Kulshekar Church on Wednesday, September 8.

Catholics in Mangalore  are celebrating the Nativity feast of Mother, which is popularly known as Monthi Fest every year on the 8th of September very grandly. The first thing that comes to our mind when we celebrate this feast is colorful flowers, sugar cane, odd number of special vegetarian dishes and vorn/roce.  This feast brings out totally a different kind of spirit compared to Christmas and Easter.  All churches in Mangalore celebrate this holy occasion with a festive mass.

Verieties of flowers with hundreds of colours were the beauty of the ceremony. The celebrations began at various churches all around the district at 7am. Singing hymns and prayers at the grotto of the mother Mary, taking procession with Musical band, Children in their best dresses showered flowers all over the Church premises filling it with colours of the flowers.


The rain that had started on Tuesday continued incessantly even on Wednesday as children and their family members were getting ready to go for the feast mass at 7.00am. Braving the morning rain, parishioners streamed in the church with flowers. Though their fine festive dresses were a little wet, their spirit and devotion was quite high.

After the Feast Mass, people have proceeded to their respective homes carrying the blessed new paddy. They will take the paddy inside the house by lighting candles and placing it at decorated altar. Before the vegetarian lunch they will take out the kernel and mix it with sweet preparation and consume it thanking Almighty God for the gift of new harvest.
