Mangalore, Mar 28: The Christian community of Mangalore observed Palm Sunday on March 28, today. The day also marks the beginning of the Holy Week.
Palm Sunday is observed in honor of Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem riding a donkey while thousands of his disciples threw their upper garments on the ground before him and waved palm leaves into the air. The incident is also symbolic of the victory of good over evil.
On Palm Sunday, Christians enact this biblical scene by organizing a procession in which each Christian carries a palm leaf in his/her hand. The palm leaves are previously blessed by the parish priests.
Grand Palm Sunday processions were observed in the parishes of Valencia, Milagres, Urwa, Bondel, Bendur, Rosario, Angelore, Derebail, and others. Similar celebrations were also held in rural parishes of Mangalore as well as in Udupi and Kasargod.
