Mangalore, Nov 12: The coast guards, following cues given by local fishermen’s associations and various other reliable sources, successfully located a boat that was reported missing and rescued 5 of its crew. Led by Commandant Arun, a team of coast guards, conducted an intensive search on their interceptor boat C 114, located the unfortunate boat, and towed it toward New Mangalore Port.
The rescued boat, MFV Zena, had ventured into the sea from the city’s old port on Nov 7, Saturday, in the wee hours of the morning. Later, it was reported to have been caught by cyclone Phyam on the high sea. Another fishing boat helped 2 of its crew of 7 to reach the shores safely. The other 5, who were still stuck in the sea because of bad weather, were rescued by the coast guards after an intensive search operation.
The 2 fishermen who had managed to reach the shores on Nov 10 informed the owner of the boat, who sent another boat to the rescue immediately. However, the stormy weather did not facilitate any rescue operation. Ultimately, he sought the help of the coast guards who successfully located to the boat, which was stranded 14 nautical miles from the Malpe coast, near Udupi.
Commandant Arun informed media people that 6 fishing boats had gotten into trouble because of the cyclone. All the boats and their respective crews have been successfully found thanks to the efforts of the coastal police and the coast guards. The air units also played a very important role in locating and rescuing a number of fishermen in trouble.
