Mangaluru, April 14, 2025: The Constitution drafted under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is a remedy for all of the country’s problems, said Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader. He emphasized that it is the duty of governments to provide a peaceful environment to citizens by governing in accordance with the ideals of the Constitution.
He was speaking at the 134th birth anniversary celebration of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, held at Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall on Monday. The event was organized by the Dakshina Kannada district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Mangaluru City Corporation, and the Department of Social Welfare.
Khader stated that those who live by the values of the Constitution are the true patriots who empower the nation. He stressed the importance of understanding history in order to create history, urging everyone to imbibe Dr. Ambedkar’s ideals into their personal lives and read the Constitution.
He pointed out that even though countries like the United States and France had democratic systems in place 200 years ago, women there still lacked voting rights. However, thanks to Dr. Ambedkar’s strong advocacy, India’s Constitution granted voting rights to women right from the start, establishing India as the world’s largest democracy. He said that it is because of the rights embedded in our Constitution that people from Kashmir to Kanyakumari can travel without fear.
Participating as chief guest, MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta highlighted Ambedkar’s pivotal role as the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee in ensuring unity, integrity, and upliftment of the most marginalized people in the country.
He noted that India has grown to become the fifth-largest power in the world, and Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions were crucial to that growth. Ambedkar not only believed in geographical unity but also strongly emphasized cultural unity, which is why the Constitution remains timeless. Since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, respect has been shown not just to Ambedkar’s portraits and statues, but also to his ideals and thoughts. Places associated with Ambedkar’s birth, education, enlightenment, and final journey have been developed into places of reverence, he said.
During the event, meritorious students from social welfare department hostels who scored top marks in the 2023–24 SSLC exams and the 2024–25 PUC exams were honored.
Symbolic approval letters were also distributed to eligible beneficiaries of various schemes under the Ambedkar Development Corporation.
Dr. Vasudeva Belle, Principal of Mulki Government Pre-University College, delivered the keynote address.
Other dignitaries on the dais included MLC Ivan D’Souza, Konkani Sahitya Academy President Stany Alvares, Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr. Anand, Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr. Santosh Kumar, and Superintendent of Police Yateesh.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Hemalatha, Deputy Director of the District Social Welfare Department.
