Container traffic gathers speed at New Mangalore port

Mangalore, December 27: With the New Mangalore Port handling 2,173 TEUs of containers from six vessels in four days, container traffic is gaining momentum at the port.

Mr P Tamilvanan chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust said that the port handled six container vessels from December 17 to 20. Of the six vessels, two were mainline container vessels.

The two mainline container vessels MV Kota Nilam and MV Kumasi brought raw cashew cargo for processing units in coastal Karnataka from East Africa.

The port handled 294 TEUs of containers from MV Kota Nilam of Pacific International Lines and 198 TEUs of containers from m.v. Kumasi of the CMA CGM Group.

Apart from the import cargo, one of the mainline container vessels even loaded export cargo.

The port handled 29,483 TEUs of containers till December 20 during the financial year as against 20,493 TEUs in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, registering a growth of 43%.

Mr Tamilvanan attributed growth in container cargo to the marketing drive taken up by the port and the freight advantage offered at the port for container cargo.

The port handled a maximum of 611 TEUs of containers in a single ship on MV Tiger Power on December 17, surpassing the earlier record of 555 TEUs handled on September 26.

Mr S Gopalakrishna traffic manager of the NMPT said that three container vessels were handled simultaneously in three berths at the port on December 18 and 19. He added that this is also an achievement of the port. BL
