Udupi, May 22, 2013 : A couples lost their lives in two separate mishaps reported from Kaup and Padubidri which resulted in the death of five persons on May 21, Tuesday.
In the first incident, a negligent driving by a KSRTC bus driver claimed the life of a couple when their Honda Activa was knocked down by a bus on NH 66 near the old Marigudi Temple.
The deceased are Balakrishna Shetty (50) and his wife Mamatha Shetty (40), hailing from Tenkukere Hosamane, Padu village.
The couple were heading towards Kaup from Kurkalu when the KSRTC Volvo bus in a bid to overtake a tanker hit their two-wheeler.
Sources said the critically injured couple lay on the road for nearly 30 minutes with no help coming forth. Even the 108 Ambulance of Kaup was under repair and any other government ambulance too was unavailable.
Kaup police later made arrangements to shift the injured to the hospital, but of no avail. Former Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon too visited the spot. The couple leave behind three children. Kaup police have registered a case.
Padubidri : In another accident reported from Beedu near Padubidri on the same day, three persons including a couple were killed when a tanker collided head-on with their Maruti car.
The deceased are Aruna Rai, the Secretary of Majoor Gram Panchayat, her husband Satish Rai and Satish Kumar.
The accident took place when the three were heading towards Kumble from Kaup. The couple had constructed a new house there. The tanker was going towards Udupi from Mangalore.
If Satish died on the spot, Aruna and her husband who were critically injured died in the hospital. Here too the ambulance arrived quite late.
