Mangalore, Nov 12: “Coastal Karnataka ranks first in the area of banking and education and also in the private sector,” said Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj. He was delivering a talk titled “Developmental Plans of Dakshina Kannada” organized by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) at KCCI Exim Felicitation Center, Chamber Building, Bunder, on Nov 12, Thursday.
The DC informed the audience that Mangalore has the required economy; however, it has transformed the primary sector into the service sector, neglecting the secondary sector. He added that even the primary sector has subsequently been neglected. Mangaloreans need to work on its medium and small scale industries, he urged.
He said that the major problem faced by industries at present is shortage of skilled labor. People are unwilling to walk into the primary or secondary sectors, but are eager to work in the service sectors. Therefore, building the required skilled labor force is of paramount importance. Organizations must focus on transforming unskilled labor to skilled labor and avoid exporting highly skilled labor as well as capital to foreign countries.
He remarked that, owing to the rising cost of land, neither can small industries be established nor can large industries be developed. The most lucrative fields at present are those of education and medicine.
The DC said that new roads will be constructed in the near future in keeping with the requirements of the growing city. Since coastal Karnataka and Mangalore are unplanned, a major percentage of the city’s infrastructure, outlook, and character resemble that of rural areas at present.
Srinivas S Kamath, the president of KCCI, welcomed the gathering. G G Mohandas Prabhu, the vice president of KCCI, introduced the chief guest. Mohammed Ameen, the secretary, proposed the vote of thanks.
