dc v ponnuraj aug 22Mangalore, Aug 22: Mayur Ullal, the president of Sand Contractors, Sand Boat Owners – Workers and Building Materials Transporters Joint Action Committee, said that over 500 lorry owners, sand contractors, sand boat owners, and everybody involved in the trade will view the flagging off of sand lorries fitted with identification stickers and GPS at Town Hall on Tuesday.

The stickers will be released by Chairman of Coastal Development Authority B. Nagaraj Shetty. DC V. Ponnuraj will flag off the GPS-fitted lorries. Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh will issue identification cards to the members of the joint action committee. B. S. Ravindra, the deputy director of the department of mines and geology, will conduct a workshop on the legal aspects of mineral trade.

Everybody involved in the sand trade is not required to take these steps; however, the joint action committee has decided to accept the district administration directive to regulate illegal sand trade. There are GPS control centres in the committee office, in the deputy commissioner’s office, and in the office of ISearch, the company that has fitted the lorries with GPS.

Sand lorry owners have taken steps to regulate illegal transportation of sand by accepting common color codes of blue bumpers, white bonnets, and the letters “Maralu Sagata Vahana” on the bonnet. These lorries have also been fitted with GPS and have identification stickers on their left hand side of their windshields.
