Mangalore, November 1, 2009: A day-long seminar, based on the theme “yesterday, today, and tomorrow” was organized in C V Raman Pai Hall, as part of the Vishwa Tulu Sammelan 2009 to be held in December 2009. The seminar was inaugurated by N Vinaya Hegde, the chairman of NITTE Education Trust.
During his inaugural speech, Mr. Hegde said that the Tulu-speaking community must focus on getting their language internationally recognized. The traditional and cultural richness of Tulu must be made known to people all over the world, especially to those who fear that the language will soon become extinct. He lauded the decision to hold a Vishwa Tulu Sammelan, which he called a “milestone” in the history of the language and one that is sure to receive a lot of positive feedback from the speakers of Tulu.
The seminar dealt with topics such as the social, economic, and commercial issues of Tulunadu, including the burning issue of the Netravathi River diversion. The various issues discussed were education, industry, fisheries, health, tourism, transport, media, commerce, export, banking, cooperation, and the overall development activities in coastal Karnataka.
The president of the convention, Dr D Veerendra Heggade, spoke about the various objectives of the Vishwa Tulu Sammelan. B Nagaraj Shetty, the chairman of the Coastal Development Authority; Dr N K Thingalaya, the former president of the Syndicate Bank; Dr. B Yashovarma, the secretary of the convention; Dr. Devaraj K, the principal of SDM College; and Dr. K Sunder Naik, the additional principal chief forest officer, were the prominent citizens present at the inaugural programme of this seminar.
