Deputy Commissioner honors journalists for humanitarian efforts in Shirur landslide aftermath

Mangaluru, July 25, 2024: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP honored a group of journalists from Mangaluru at his office on Wednesday for their humanitarian assistance in the funeral rites of an elderly woman who died in the Shirur landslide.

The body of the elderly woman, Sanni Hanumanth Gowda from Uluware village, was discovered on Tuesday, eight days after the landslide occurred. Journalists Shashi Bellayaru, Mohan Kuttar, Arif UR, Girish Malali, and Shivashankar played a vital role in transporting the body to her home for the final rites after the postmortem.

Upon noticing media reports about their actions, the Deputy Commissioner, informed by DK Working Journalists’ Association President Srinivas Nayak Indaje, invited the journalists to his office to honor them.

"Your actions are commendable and bring pride to the Dakshina Kannada district. Continue to engage in such social work. If you need any support, the district administration is with you. Society needs enthusiastic young people like you," the Deputy Commissioner said. He also gathered information from the journalists about the current situation in the Shirur and Uluware villages.

Senior Assistant Director of the Dakshina Kannada District Information and Public Relations Department, Khader Shah, along with Ullal Taluk Working Journalists’ Association President Vasanth N Konaje and Ganesh Talapadi, were also present at the event.
