Mangalore, Jan 10:  Shubhod Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, Dakshina kannada district, inaugurated the national consumers day at Ganapathy High School Hall on Monday January 10. The function was held under the joint auspices of district administration food and civil supplies department Mangalore, district consumer federation and district consumer information center.

District administration celebrates National Consumer Day


National Consumer Day was observed on Monday, reminding each individual those protecting consumers’ interests is one of the most important activities for the government. This helps ensure accountability and efficiency for both the government and the corporate sector.


Speaking on the occasion, Subhod Yadav said that the Consumer Protection Act -1986 came into force to create awareness among the consumers regarding their rights and responsibilities. He said that every consumer should have the basic knowledge of weight variations, quality, price and brand of the product in order to prevent any possible cheating by supplier.


In his key note address, M J Salian, District Consumer Federation President said that the consumer protection Act, 1986 is one of the benevolent social legislation intended to protect the large body of consumers from exploitation. It has become the vehicle for enabling people to secure speedy and inexpensive redressal of their grievances with the enactment of this law. Consumers now feel that they are in a position to declare "Sellers be Aware" whereas previously the consumers were at the receiving end and generally told "Buyers be Aware". The act also gives full right for consumer to register complaint incase they are cheated by the distributor. The cheated consumer can approach information centre to register his grievance.   


Zilla Panchayath CEO P Shivashanka,. DDPI Chame Gowda Food and Civil Supplies Department deputy director Vrushabha Rajendra Moorthy and principal of GHS Shanthakumari Devi were present.
