District administration ready to tackle monsoon-related calamities: DC

Mangalore, Jun 14: The district administration says that it is prepared to face the onslaught of the intensifying monsoons, which might cause losses in life and property in several areas of DK. 


dcV. Ponnuraj, the deputy commissioner of DK district, said during a meeting convened to review preparations for the monsoons on June 14, Monday that the administration has taken all precautionary measures to protect life and property in case of artificial or natural floods. 


Pointing out that Bantwal and Mangalore have some regions susceptible to floods, he said that there are no chances of flooding in any other region although they might face different types of problems due to the floods and that the district administration is prepared to face any type of problem. 


He also said that the administration will construct storm water drains whenever necessary because it might help stop flooding, especially in low-lying areas. He said that areas prone to artificial flooding in Mangalore have been identified and that the aid of the fire department, department of fisheries, and the home guards has been enlisted in case of trouble. 


District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar directed officials to design action plans at the taluk levels and take precautions to tackle monsoon-related challenges such as uprooting of trees, artificial floods, fallen electric poles, and water-borne diseases. He requested concerned officials to keep JCBs, tippers, and cranes ready in areas such as Charmadi and Shiradi Ghat. 


Palemar also warned the National Highway Authority to close giant pits dug to build pillars in Kulur, adding that the NHA will be held responsible for any loss of life or property owing to these pits. 


NHA officials have assured that the construction of over bridges will be completed in Kottara and BC Road by the end of next September and in Suratkal and Kulur by the end of next October. 


Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) K. N. Vijayaprakash assured that the civic body is ready to protect life and property in Mangalore from monsoon-related calamities. He said that a special MCC squad has been formed to help people in distress. People in need can call help lines 2220306 and 2220358.
