Mangalore, Feb 5: The district administration and Vijaya Bank will jointly organize Mangalore Half Marathon 2011 on the theme of “clean green progressive Mangalore” from Nehru Maidan to Mangala Stadium on Feb 20, Sunday, from 6:00 a.m.

District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar told reporters at a press conference held at the DC’s office on Feb 5, Saturday that the district administration wants to safeguard the environment while simultaneously developing the city.

The organizers expect 5000 people to participate in the event. Palemar mentioned that the marathon is meant for people of all castes, religions, and political parties. He also said that those who wish to participate in the spirit of sport will be placed in a different category and that a separate 6km event will be arranged to encourage the others.

The first ten winners of the half marathon will be awarded certificates, medals, and cash prizes, he said. The participants are expected to meet at the venue at 6:00 a.m., and the event will commence at 6:30 a.m. The 6km mini marathon will commence at 7:00 a.m., he said.

A cultural programme will be held at Mangala Stadium at 8:00 a.m. and the valedictory function and the prize distribution ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m., he said.

The half marathon will commence at Nehru Maidan and will proceed to Mangala Stadium via Pandeshwar, Mangaladevi, Jeppu Market, Valencia, Kankanady, Jyothi Circle, Hampankatta, Navabharath Circle, PVS Road, City Hospital, Nanthoor, Kadri Park, Bejai Road, KSRTC, Kuntikana Road, Infosys, Urwa Store, and Chilimbi Road.

The mini marathon will commence at Nehru Maidan and will proceed to Mangala Stadium via Hampankatta, Tagore Park, Jyothi Circle, Bunts Hostel, Karangalpady, Jail Road, Canara College Road, MG Road, and Lady Hill Road.

The winner of the half marathon will receive a cash prize of Rs. 20,000, while those who come second, third, fourth, and fifth will win Rs. 10,000, 5000, 3000, and 2000, respectively. Those who come sixth to tenth will get Rs. 1000 each.

The winner of the mini marathon will receive a cash prize of Rs. 3000, while those who come second and third will win Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 2,000, respectively. Those who come fourth, fifth, and sixth will win Rs. 500 each.

Certificates will be conferred on the fifty top achievers of the mini marathon. Participants can register their names at all branches of Vijaya Bank on or before Feb 17 at 5:30 p.m.

N. Yogesh Bhat, the deputy speaker, said that this marathon will enhance awareness of environmental issues among the public and will convey the message that protection of environment and city development should go hand in hand. He added that people’s participation is of great importance.


MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, DC Subodh Yadav, Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, SP Dr. A. Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, and Additional Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalakatti were also present at the press meet.

The dignitaries launched banners and hoardings of the half marathon; and Palemar officially inaugurated the paperless workstation of the DC’s office.
