Both cases involved removal of the tumor along with major part of the pelvis (hip)bone.  The bone was then sent for high dose radiation in another building of K S Hegde Hospital which completely eradicates the tumor. The radiated bone is then brought back to operation theatre and was re-implanted into the pelvis restoring the hip joint. These complex surgeries last for more than ten hours each for completion. The team that made this possible involved Senior orthopaedic surgeon and head of department Dr. Vikram Shetty, Senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Siddharth Shetty, orthopaedic onco-surgeonDr. Navaneeth S Kamath, radiation oncologists- late Dr. Jayaram Shetty, Dr Sandeep Ail, Dr Mallikarjun Rao, anaesthesiologist and head of department Dr.Sripada G Mehandale, anesthesiology consultant Dr. Gandeeva Ramesh accompanied by chief radiation technologist Mr.Vasudeva Rao H, medical physicist Ms.Deeksha Shetty with support from Dr Sumalatha Shetty , Medical superintendent of KSHegde Hospital.

Both the patients are now beyond seven months from the time of surgery and are resuming routine normal activities. Though the above-mentionedteam does similar procedure for the bone tumors of the long bones in limbs, performing the same procedure in pelvis is technically challenging. Thisneeds complex planning and teamwork for long hours of surgery. Moreover, K S Hegde Hospital’s tissue bank also helps in recycling bone tissues.  This tissue bank has been helping surgeons not only from Karnataka but also to surgeons in Hyderabad and Kerala since last two years. People of Mangaluru can now get such high-quality work in the city without a need to travel to Mumbai or outside India
