Mangalore, Nov 4: Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade said that radio was the most important medium for the dissemination of information to the public post independence. He was delivering the inaugural address on the occasion of the day-long national seminar on “Akashavani – Then and Now” organized by the National Federation of Akashavani and Doordarshan Employees (NFADE) (Mangalore unit) in collaboration with the Karnataka Media Academy of Bangalore at SDM College of Business Management on Nov 4, Thursday.

Speaking about the necessity of strengthening national broadcast media such as Akashavani, which has played a great role in building national pride among people by promoting and protecting the cultural diversity of the nation, he said that the AIR has reached out to people in every nook and corner of the country, something that has not been done by any other form of mass media. Even today, none of the TV news channels have such a great impact on the people like the Kannada, English, and Hindi news broadcasts in Akashavani.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel released “Banuliya Belaku,” a commemorative issue, after which he said that FM channels such as Radio Mirchi and others with slogans such as “Sakath Hot Maga” cause anger. One must listen to Akashavani to gain interest in the radio, he added. Earlier Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan on Doordarshan could hold people’s attention for one hour, something that none of the channels can do at present.

M. V. Kamath, noted journalist and former chairman of Prasar Bharathi, said in his presidential address that Prasar Bharathi aims at educating and informing the general public. Today channels hardly give any information, but only provide breaking news and vulgarity, something that Doordarshan had never done. Speaking about the current status of Prasar Bharathi, he said that it is a huge joke in the country because it has no powers.

Chandrashekar M., the local unit coordinator of NFADE, Anilkumar S., the chairman of NFADE, New Delhi; and Dr. Vasanthkumar Perla, the programme coordinator, were present on the dais. A. S. Chandramouli, the assistant director of Bangalore Doordarshan Kendra and H. V. Hemachandra Rao, the retired director of Akashavani Bangalore, will speak on various topics during the first seminar, which will be presided over by N. G. Shrinivas, the retired deputy director general of AIR and DD.
