Malpe, Dec. 23: One dead and two seriously burned in an accidental fire occurred in a Ship yard at Malpe in the evening, Wednesday, December 23. The fire occurred in the welding and cutting section of the Tebma Ship yard when three of the welding men were at work on the covered part of the ship yard. The spark from the welding said to have caught the waste oil spilled around leading to fire.
All the three workers are said to be from north India. The dead person is identified as ’Bablu Singh’ hailing from UP. Two of the seriously burned persons are admitted in KMC, Manipal. There was no Fire extinguishers or water available in the area where the fire accident took place. "The mishap could have been avoided if the management had precausionary measures" said one of the employees.
The Fire service did not respond in spite of informing them. Angry co-workers and onlookers smashed and destroyed many vehicle and two wheelers parked aside. One Police Jeep is said to have toppled by the mob. Police arrived late but could control the anger of the people. Police had to resort to lathi-charge to make the situation under control. DySP, Jayanth Shetty arrived and taken charge. The situation is now under control.
