First Indian American Methodist Bishop Sudarshan Devadhar passes away

Mangaluru, July 25, 2023: Bishop Sudarshan Devadhar, a retired bishop of The United Methodist Church (UMC), passed away on July 19 in the United States. Sudarshan Devadhar hailed from Mulki and was the first Indian American Bishop of United Methodist Church.

Bishop Devadhar was elected to the episcopacy in 2004 by the Northeastern Jurisdictional (NEJ) Conference of The United Methodist Church. He retired on January 1, 2023.

Bishop Devadhar began his assignment as the leader of the New Jersey Episcopal Area on September 1, 2004. After serving in the New Jersey Area for 8 years, he was assigned to the Boston Area in July 2012.

Born on April 6, 1951, Sudarshan Devadhar did his B.Com from Vijaya College, Mulki. He pursued his B.D. degree from United Theological College, Bangalore and later secured a M.Th. degree from Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University and an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. from Drew University.

Bishop Sudarshan Devadhar is survived by his wife and daughter.
