Five persons convicted in child marriage case in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, December 17, 2024: The Additional District and Sessions Court - FTSC-II (Pocso) Judge Maanu K S has convicted five persons to one-year rigorous imprisonment and slapped a total fine of Rs 35,000, in a child marriage case under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

The convicted are Mahammad Imtiyaz (29), husband of the minor, from Montepadav, Ullal, Abdul Khader (41) and Ramlath (43) from Ramalkatte in Bantwal, parents of the minor girl, and K I Mohammed and Maimuna from Montepadav, parents of Imtiyaz.


Child marriage


According to special public prosecutor Badrinath Nairi, Mahammad Imtiyaz had married the 17-year-old minor girl on May 31, 2023, with support of both the families. The marriage reception was held on June 1 at a hall in Kairangala of Ullal.

An FIR was registered at the Women’s Police Station in the city based on a complaint filed by an officer from the Department of Women and Child Development regarding the marriage of a minor girl under section 6 of the Pocso Act and Sections 8, 10, 11 of Child marriage Act.

Inspector Rajendra B conducted an investigation and filed the chargesheet to the court. The court examined 10 witnesses and marked 22 documents.
