Mangalore, December 31: The bygone year 2009 was a year of diverse happenings for Mangalore. While many local developments were positive, a few unfortunate incidents put Mangalore in the national media spotlight and earned a bad name for the city. We present here a few important highlights of the Year 2009.

JANUARY 2009

5 - V Ponnuraj takes charge as Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner.

12 - Air India Express launched daily night-flight services between Dubai and Mangalore

14 - K K Pai, the former Chairman and Managing Director of the Syndicate Bank, passed away.

 

24 - Sri Rama Sene barges into pub, beat up boys, girls at Amnesia Pub in Mangalore.

24 - Mangalore Today Lifetime Achievement Award presented to A.G. Kodgi

FEBRUARY 2009

6 - Manjeshwar MLA C H Kunhabbu’s daughter Shruthi, a II PUC student in St Aloysius college was abducted by Hindu outfit members for having spoken to her friend’s brother belonging to other community.

11 - Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Renuka Chowdhury was issued a notice by MCC Mayor for her statements that ‘Mangalore has been Talibanised’ and that ‘there is a clean communal divide in Mangalore where a Hindu girl is prevented from talking to a Muslim boy in Mangalore’.

 

16 - District-in-Charge Minister Krishna J Palemar lays foundation stone for the second vented dam across river Nethravathi

19 - 175th anniversary of arrival of first missionaries of Basel Mission in India

3 - Dr A S Rao takes charge as Supt. of Police, Dakshina Kannada.

17 - Violence in Puttur after moral police assault students from Mangalore; police resort to lathi-charge; ban orders clamped.

25 -8 Naxals visit houses in and around Muniyal in Karkala urging people to boycott polls.

30 - Rashid Malbari, notorious Interpol notified criminal and aide of Chota Shakeel was held.

APRIL 2009

9 - Naushad Kashimji, a City-based advocate shot dead by unknown assailants. Naushad was the advocate for Rasheed Malbari.

11 - Gandhian, veteran litterateur, three time MLA B M Idinabba passes away.

11 - Rev Fr Lawrence D’Souza (76) from Mulky, popularly known as ‘UNESCO Father’, passes away.

26 -UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi addresses election rally in Mangalore.

30 - Lok Sabha elections held; 74.33 pc polling in DK-the highest in the State.

MAY 2009

16 – BJP won again in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency with Nalin Kumar Kateel and D V Sadananda Gowda defeating Veteran Congress Leader Janardhan Poojary and Jayaprakash Hegde respectively.


JUNE 2009

9 - 62 students in a Muslim Residential School at Natekal fell ill consuming school food. 

9 - First case of swine flu reported in Mangalore.

JULY 2009

5 - Rowdy-sheeter Vamanjoor Rohi alias Vamanjur Rohidas Shetty was brutally murdered.

 

7 - Heavy rains, Water at Thumbe vented dam started overflowing more than previous year. Rain death toll goes up to 12 in DK.

14 - Silver jubilee celebrations of Fr Muller Homoeo college kicks off

14 - P Jayarama Bhat has taken charge as Managing Director and CEO of Karnataka Bank Ltd. Ananthakrishna became Ex-officio Chairman.

 

17 -Chinese vessel ‘MV Asian Forest’ stranded near Mangalore coast. 18 crew members of the vessel were rescued by local Fishermen and Coast Guards.

18 - Founder of Kanyadi Rama Mandir near Dharmasthala, Atmananda Saraswathi Swamiji passed away


24 - Extension of Mangalore- Bangalore train to Kannur announced.

30 — Parish Priest Rev Fr James Mukalel (39) of St Mary’s Church near Kadaba was found dead on the roadside under mysterious circumstances.

AUGUST 2009

1 - The cargo handling workers in NMPT workers goes on strike against the implementation of award of the National Industrial Tribunal, for the new manning scale and deployment of workers in various departments.

6 - Golden jubilee celebrations of NITK begins

13 - The month long ‘Sri Krishna Maasotsava’ kicked off at the Sri Krishna Mutt in Udupi.

14 - 36 swine flu cases suspected in DK. Seven confirmed.

20 - Ban orders in Mangalore following six stabbing incidents, desecration of temple and mosque.

20 - Ban on head scarf at SVS college in Bantwal kicks up a controversy.

20 -KPL Mangalore team named ‘Mangalore United’, Logo released.

21 - 3-day painting expo “Eternal Ganesha” by the artists Purushottham Adve and Jayavanth was forcibly stopped by the Sanathana Samsthe activists..

29 - The day train between Mangalore and Yeshwanthpur flagged off by Railway Minister for state Muniyappa.

13 -Baindur railway station has been finally renamed as Mookambika Road Baindur.

14 - All the churches in Mangalore diocese held special prayer meets throughout the day on Monday to commemorate the first anniversary of attacks on places of worship, ( on September 14, 2008).

23 - Governor of Karnataka H R Bharadwaj launches Community radio station ‘Sarang’ at St Aloysius College


OCTOBER 2009

1 - Aerofest-2009 kicks off in Manipal

21 - Serial killer Mohan Kumar (46) hailing from Kanyana of Bantwal taluk nabbed

25 - S M Krishna inaugurates first Haj flight from Mangalore.

31 - Seminar on “Diversion of Netravathi, business and economic development: Yesterday, today and tomorrow” held as part of Vishwa Tulu Sammelan.

NOVEMBER 2009

1 - The State government approved Rs 21 crore special grant for the infrastructure development of district in view Vishwa Tulu Sammelan.

5 - District administration demolished 6 houses and other illegal structures worth more than Rs 5 crore at Someshwar and Uchil.

15 - Two persons were killed in police firing while several others suffered injuries during the Muslim League convention in Kasaragod.

28 - Former MLA Padmanabha Kottari has been elected as the Dakshina Kannada district president of BJP.

29 - SMIT Singapore Private Limited (SSPL), the Singapore based salvage company commenced salvage operations for the removal of oil from the sunken vessel M V Asian Forest.

30 - Mega Bible exhibition for the Catholic Christians started at Milagres Junior College
