Full classes on Saturdays to compensate for rain holidays in Dakshina Kannada

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, August 11, 2024: In Dakshina Kannada district, the district administration had announced 13 days of holidays for schools and colleges due to the monsoon season. To compensate for these rain holidays, the education department is now considering holding full-day classes on the upcoming 26 Saturdays.

Officials from the education department noted that Dakshina Kannada district has consistently been at the forefront in declaring holidays during the monsoon season over the past few years. These holidays at the start of the academic year have impacted the academic schedule. However, no effective plan has been implemented to compensate for this lost time.

The department is also considering conducting full-day classes on both Saturdays and Sundays for PU colleges. However, students from the science stream, who attend coaching for CET, NEET, and JEE exams, are reluctant to attend classes on Sundays. Some colleges have already started holding full-day classes on Saturdays, and other colleges are expected to make a decision soon.

Speaking on the matter, the DDPI stated that SSLC and PUC are critical stages in education. This year’s monsoon holidays could have a significant impact on these classes. Therefore, it has been decided to hold special classes for SSLC students for one hour each in the morning and evening. Schools have already been instructed accordingly. PU colleges have been advised to hold full-day classes on Saturdays and half-day classes on Sundays if necessary.

The situation in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts is unique compared to other parts of the state. Even before government officials issue instructions, college administrations begin special classes to complete the curriculum. While private institutions have been using online classes, they have not been as effective, prompting the consideration of resuming physical classes. Education department officials have indicated that they will issue instructions to hold full-day classes on Saturdays as soon as the rains subside.

The rain holidays granted in Dakshina Kannada district have been uneven, with some taluks receiving additional holidays. Therefore, decisions will be made while balancing both situations. Although this plan may start in September, it could continue until the end of February. It is also speculated that the state government might reduce the Dussehra and Christmas holidays.
