Mangaluru, Mar 2, 2025: The Marine Coastal Survey Division (MCSD) of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Mangaluru, organized a walkathon on March 2 as part of a nationwide event commemorating the 175th anniversary of the GSI and its contributions to the nation.
Held under the theme “Geoscience for a Safe World,” the walkathon was inaugurated by Sidharth Goyal, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Mangaluru City, and Premanand Shetty, former mayor and corporator, Mangaluru City Corporation. The event was graced by Dr. M.N. Shareef, Deputy Director General (DDG) and Head of Division (HOD) of MCSD, and other dignitaries, including Anjaneyulu Katari, Head of Office, and Dr. C.V. Gopalan, Director.
The event began at the GSI office premises, where participants registered and received event kits, including t-shirts, caps, and handbags. Dr. M.N. Shareef welcomed the attendees and highlighted the organization’s 175 years of geoscientific achievements, while Premanand Shetty lauded GSI’s enduring legacy.
The walkathon, flagged off by the chief guest, followed a pre-planned route encompassing notable landmarks such as Mangaladevi Circle and Mangaladevi Temple. Participants, holding banners celebrating GSI’s contributions, included 160 individuals from diverse backgrounds, including GSI staff, their families, students, and members of the public.
The event was supervised by Sarath L.G., Director, MCSD, and local police officers to ensure safety. Participants returned to the GSI office after completing the route, where they were offered refreshments and addressed by Anjaneyulu Katari, who expressed gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and the organizing committee.
Mementos were presented to the chief guests, and certificates of participation were distributed to all attendees. The event, spearheaded by Dr. M.N. Shareef and Anjaneyulu Katari, was a testament to teamwork, meticulous planning, and a shared commitment to celebrating geoscientific excellence.
This walkathon, part of GSI’s historic Pan-Indian initiative, symbolized unity and pride, reinforcing the theme of creating a safer world through geoscience.
