Mangaluru, Sep 19, 2023: Dakshina Kannada district is celebrating Ganesha Chaturthi grandly on September 19, Tuesday.
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the birthday of Lord Ganesha, on the fourth day of the moon’s bright fortnight in the lunar month of Bhadrapada. The celebrations usually continue for five or seven days starting from Bhadrapada Shudha Chaturthi to Anantha Chaturthi.
The celebration which was first started by the great Maratha ruler Chatrapati Shivaji to promote culture and nationalism, was later on revived by the renowned freedom fighter Lokamanya Balgangadhar Tilak to spread the message of freedom. Tilak chose Ganesha as a rallying point for
Indian protest against British rule because of his wide appeal. The celebrations also proved a means of awakening public opinion against British rule.
Over the years, Ganesha Chaturthi continued to be celebrated with the same fervor and till date is one of the major Indian festivals that continue to draw crowds, thanks to the magical spell of Lord Ganesha.
In Mangaluru, at several places Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava is celebrated. The idols of Lord Ganesha are installed and worshipped and later immersed after a grand Shobhayatra.
Ganesha idols are also installed at several homes and festivities continue all through the day.
