Sowjanya12nov18 1Mangalore, Nov 18, 2012: The Government of Karnataka has referred the rape and murder case of 17-year-old Sowjanya to the Corps of Investigation Department (CID) on Saturday.

Home Minister R. Ashok said that the investigation of this case has been handed over to the CID police, who will investigate the alleged involvement of certain groups and organizations in the murder as well as the spread of false rumors regarding the involvement of Dharmasthala temple authorities in this case.

Sowjanya of Dharmasthala, a PUC student at SDM College Ujire, was raped and murdered last month.

Although the local police had arrested Santhosh Rao in connection with the case, a few pro Hindu outfits were not happy with the investigation and had demanded that the case should be handed over to the CID.

The family of Sowjanya and Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, the dharmadhikari of Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala, had appealed for a high-level investigation of this case
