Mangalore, May 14: B. Nagaraj Shetty, the chairman of the Coastal Development Authority (CDA), announced at an interactive session organized by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Saturday that the state is making plans to convene a joint investors’ and NRIs’ meet in coastal Karnataka, which is closely associated with the Gulf and other foreign countries. This event will be held either in Udupi or Mangalore during the last week of December, he added.

Mr. Shetty expressed hopes that the event will lead to quick development of the coastal regions by attracting a number of investors and said that several NRIs and investors are expected to participate in this event.

He also revealed that the government is mulling over a project called “Soubhagya Sanjeevini,” which plans to link 13 of the 14 rivers in DK and Udupi in a bid to effectively utilize the rain water that flows into the sea and goes waste during the monsoons.

Mr. Shetty also spoke of the importance of establishing a Karnataka Maritime Board modeled on those available in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.

Stating that the twin districts are not being developed at the expected pace in spite of the large number of banks and educational institutions they have, he said that this is because successive governments are paying scant attention to the coastal regions of the state.

G. G. Mohandas Prabhu, the president of KCCI; Shrinivas Kamath, the former president of KCCI; and Vice President Latha Kini were also present.
