Hebri, June 6, 2013: The need of the hour is for governments as well as litterateurs to give a serious thought to preserve and promote Kannada at a time when many a Kannada medium schools which have celebrated their centenary are on the verge of closure for want of students,” said Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pundalika Halambi.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Eighth District level Kannada Sahitya Sammelan organised at Hebri on June 6, Thursday. Continuing, Halambi said it was indeed tragic to note that Kannada language which has been accorded a classical status and which is recognized as one among the top 30 languages of the world, was struggling to retain its base despite being strong in the field of literature.
Referring to the Sarojini Mahishi report submitted to the government as many as 20 years ago, he stressed the need for the government to implement the recommendations of this report which is confined to cold storage. He demanded reservation for Kannada medium students in professional colleges and to impart primary education in Kannada medium itself.
At the same time Halambi regretted the fact that people of his home district (Dakshina Kannada, Udupi) have never raised voice when the interests of the state were at stake in Cauvery, Krishna river water issue as well as border problems.
Neelavara Surendra Adiga, District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President, H Gopal Bhandari, former MLA, Suma Adyantaya, Hebri Gram Panchayat President,ZP Member Manjunath Poojari, DK District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, ASN Hebbar, writer and others were present.
Harikrishna Punaroor, former Kannada Sahitya Parishat, released some Kannada books on the occasion.
