Mangaluru, July 23, 2023: Heavy rains lashed parts of coastal Karnataka on Saturday night and the spell is likely to continue for next 24 hours, informed Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). The north Interior regions of Karnataka are also likely to receive heavy rains.
According to KSNDMC, Neere in Udupi district received 351mm of rainfall on Saturday night, followed by Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamangaluru districts. All the Maland districts saw rainfall above 250 mm on Saturday night.
Meanwhile the Indian Meteorological Department issued an Orange alert on Saturday evening to coastal Karnataka and predicted a heavy rainfall. “Coastal Karnataka likley to get heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) on July 22 and 23,” read an announcement by the met department.
The Dakshina Kannada district experienced widespread reports of trees being uprooted and electricity poles being damaged, causing disruptions in power supply on both Saturday and Sunday.
During Saturday noon a massive billboard on the third floor of a commercial building near Thokkottu Flyover Bridge collapsed, resulting in injuries to an elderly pedestrian and blocking the national highway for several hours.
A large tree fell onto Bantwal-Mysuru National Highway 75 at Neralakatte, causing multiple electricity poles to come crashing down and affecting vehicular movement temporarily. However, the situation was later addressed as personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services and the Forest Department worked together to clear the fallen tree in the morning.
Moreover, in an effort to ensure the free flow of river water beneath the Kandadka bridge on the Sullia-Subrahmanya Road, the Sullia Town Panchayat and Forest Department personnel worked diligently to remove logs and other debris.
