Bengaluru, Sept 8, 2024: The Karnataka High Court has lifted the stay it previously granted, directing the Udupi trial court to proceed with the quadruple murder case in Malpe. The court also instructed Bengaluru Central Prison to produce the accused, Praveen Arun Chougule, via video conference.
Judge Mohammed Nawaz, on August 30, dismissed Chougule’s petition to transfer the trial from Udupi to Bengaluru, citing a perceived threat to his life. The High Court stated that Chougule, accused of murdering four members of a family on November 12, 2023, could be safely produced through video conference, making the threat claim unfounded.
The court vacated its June 6 stay order and directed the Udupi Sessions Judge to continue with the trial. Meanwhile, Chougule, currently in the quarantine block of Bengaluru Central Prison, requested a transfer to the main block, claiming he is not eating or drinking. Prison officials cited safety concerns for keeping him in quarantine, while the Sessions Judge ordered them to ensure Chougule receives proper care and medical attention. The next hearing is scheduled for October 24.
