Mangaluru, December 28, 2024: A 35 year old woman with a birth defect of the heart causing mixing of pure and impure blood underwent heart surgery through a small anterior thoracotomy at KSHEMA. This being the first time that such a procedure is conducted here. Using a 2 1/2 inch incision in the right anterior chest wall ( avoiding sternal splitting ) and connecting the patient to heart lung machine through tubes in the groin and neck as well.
using specialised Instruments the procedure was successfully carried out by the team of Dr A G Jayakrishnan, dr M. Gopalakrishnan, Dr Manjunath Kamath, Dr Naresh Hegde, Dr Anup Srinivasan, Perfusionist’s and nurses. Patient ha recovers very well from the surgery and is being discharged today. The surgery was carried out free of cost to the patient under ABARK Scheme.
