IMD issues red alert for Dakshina Kannada; Schools, colleges to stay closed on June 28

Bengaluru, June 27, 2024: Heavy rain is lashing the coastal and southern interior regions, with more intense weather expected in the next 24 hours. The weather department has advised people in these areas to take precautions. A red alert has been issued for Dakshina Kannada and an orange alert for Udupi district.

In light of this, the Dakshina Kannada district administration has announced  holiday for Anganwadi centers, primary schools, high schools and pre-university colleges
on Friday, June 28.

Winds will blow at a speed of 45 to 55 km/h along the coast, which may cause high waves. The weather department has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.

Orange alert for Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu districts for the next 24 hours. A yellow alert has been issued for Hassan district. Heavy rain will occur in some parts of Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. In Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu districts, the wind speed will be between 45 to 55 km/h along with rain. Other districts in the southern interior region and remaining districts in the northern interior region may experience moderate rain and continuous winds," the department stated.

"Southwest monsoon is strong in the coastal region, moderate in the southern interior, and weak in the northern interior," said Dr. N. Puviyarasan, a senior scientist at the Bengaluru Meteorological Centre.
