IMD issues red and high wave alerts for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi districts on July 19

Mangaluru, July 18, 2024: Moderate to heavy rainfall continues in the coastal districts, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert (extremely heavy rainfall above 204.5 mm) for the coastal region from Friday to 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The IMD has forecast squally weather with wind speeds of 35 kmph to 45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, likely to prevail along and off the Karnataka coast on Friday, advising fishermen not to venture into the sea.

On Thursday, July 18, the IMD issued a high wave alert for the coastal districts, predicting high waves ranging from 3.2 m to 3.4 m from Mulky to Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada until 11:30 p.m. on Friday. The IMD advises caution during marine operations and nearshore recreation.

For Udupi district, high waves between 3.5 m and 3.6 m are forecast from Byndoor to Kaup until 11:30 p.m. on Friday. The IMD recommends that small vessels refrain from operating, nearshore recreation activities be suspended, and notes the possibility of erosion and wave surges.

Dakshina Kannada recorded 100.9 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, compared to the normal rainfall of 41.6 mm for this period. The highest rainfall was 134.8 mm in Belthangady taluk, while the minimum was 57.7 mm in Mulky taluk, as reported by the Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority.

Udupi district recorded 86.8 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. The highest rainfall was 125.4 mm in Byndoor taluk, and the lowest was 52.7 mm in Kaup taluk, according to the Udupi Deputy Commissioner’s office.
