Mangalore, Feb 3: The annual science festival Imprints 2011 and the commerce festival Acme 2011 were inaugurated at St. Aloysius College today.

Imprints 2011

The science department of St. Aloysius College Mangalore inaugurated the 2-day national science festival and exhibition “Imprints 2011” on Feb 3, Thursday. Dr. Arunachalam Kumar, the dean of KSHEMA, inaugurated this annual event and said that science should be merged with social networking.

 

Stating that technology has altered classroom experience, he said that students cannot be taught using obsolete methods anymore. Speaking in support of the use of mobile phones, he said that using mobile phones for over 15 hours improves blood circulation and blood supply to the ear and helps heal ear infection caused by ear piercing. Expressing his appreciation of the festival, he said that such events generate several new ideas.

Rev. Fr. Swebert D’Silva, the principal of St. Aloysius College, presided over the event.


Imprints 2011 is based on the theme “the science network” and comprises events such as Log In (an ice breaker), Sci Space (a seminar), Research Gate (a physical science event), Life Knot (a life science event), Techyyz Showroom (a computer science event), Wikileaks (a quiz contest), Tweet Up (a debate), iSurvive (Imprints Personality competition), Medley of Models (a science exhibition), and Blog (a newsletter).

 

Imprints 2011 Chief Staff Coordinator Iva Pinto introduced the chief guests; and Prof Ashok Prasad, staff coordinator, spoke on Imprints.

Exhibition

A science models exhibition also forms part of Imprints 2011. The highlight of the exhibition is a natural refrigerator made of an earthen pot, coconut fibre, and a bamboo box made by Mohammed Bahabba in 1995.

 

Final year biotechnology students displayed a wide range of mushrooms and demonstrated their cultivation with the help of waste material such as cotton, banana leaves, saw dust, cardboard, and others.

 

Another team displayed an N Computing System and demonstrated how six computers could be run with one CPU. The team had installed an N computing X550 device to the CPU, which can reduce by 70 percent the power required to run 6 computers.

 

Impressive models of gobar gas production, wine production, blood circulation, antibiotic sensitivity, and others are also on display.

 

Acme 2011
The commerce department of St. Aloysius College inaugurated its 2-day national inter-collegiate commerce festival called Acme 2011 at the college. G. G. Mohandas Prabhu, the president of Kanara Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), inaugurated the event and said in his inaugural address that any crisis can be converted into an opportunity if a person or a company has the right combination of creativity, innovation, and marketing skills. He urged students to inculcate these qualities within themselves and expressed his appreciation for the entrepreneurship abilities of the people of Dakshina Kannada.


Fr. Joseph Rodrigues, who was the guest of honor at the event, said that commerce students should participate in events and not just receive.


Acme 2011, which is based on the theme “the business of music,” comprises 7 events such as Master of Puppets (best manager), Longest Day, Wall Street Shuffle (Mock Stock), LA Money Train (finance), Bohemian Rhapsody (marketing), Sultans of Swing (human resource), and Money Talks (entrepreneurial development).
