International Swimming Pool will not come up on Vanitha Vana land, clarifies MCC Commissioner

Mangalore, Dec 20, 2012: Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Harish Kumar has clarified that no swimming pool would be constructed at the place where Vanitha Vana, the exclusive park for women was located in Mangalore.


Speaking at a ‘Meet the Press’ programme organized by the DK Working Journalists’ Association and Mangalore Press Club on Dec 20,Thursday, Harish Kumar said the swimming pool of international standard would come up close  by the park at a cost of Rs 3 crore. This clarification came in the wake of some media reports which said the Vanitha Vana land would be used for the swimming pool.

The Commissioner said “The media does not give factual information to the public at times, when officials fail to give detailed information to the media.” He said the Rs 3 crores which was saved from the funds allotted for the National Youth Fest in Mangalore would be utilized towards the proposed swimming pool. He also said “The MCC was now searching for a suitable location for the same.”Plastic Ban: On plastic ban, the Commissioner said measures would be taken to strictly implement plastic ban all over the city very soon. He said the plastic manufacturing industries here have moved the High Court seeking a stay to the plastic ban. The administration is waiting for the court ruling and would respect the verdict, he said.


Asked if there would be any change in the plastic ban issue now that a new DC has taken charge, Harish Kumar said the plastic ban initiated by the former DC NS Channappa Gowda would be continued by the new DC N Prakash. “We will implement it effectively at any cost,” he added.


The Commissioner informed that the MCC has formed 5 teams of officials to monitor the implementation of plastic ban.  Countering some claims that the plastic ban would hit hard plastic industries, he said there was no question of loss since they can sell plastics in places outside Mangalore taluk.


On plastic recycling, the Commissioner said the MCC has a plan to set up a plant which can recycle plastic to oil and added the plant will come up within six months at a cost of Rs 3 crore. The plant can recycle ten tones of plastic daily, he added.


Solid Waste Management: Commenting on door to door collection of segregated waste, Harish Kumar said the funds available for the same was from suffice to meet the expenses towards the waste disposal.


He however said the MCC would penalize those who fail to hand over segregated waste to the door-to-door collectors and also those who fail to pay the fee towards the same.


 Thumbe vented dam: The Commissioner made it clear that the Thumbe vented dam would be constructed at a height of 12 meters, but that the water would be stored only upto seven meters. There was no question of increasing the size of the dam as it would necessitate acquiring 300 acres of land. The dam construction will be completed by December 2013, he said.


Road repair:  Speaking on concretization of roads, Harish Kumar said the MCC was receiving complaints of not constructing footpaths or shifting pipelines. He said tenders would soon be called to repair roads.


At the same time he said though the MCC had set apart Rs 45 crore for road repair no contractor was coming forward to take up the works. The road leading from Mannagudda to Chitra Theatre will be concretized within three months; pipelines would be shifted on preferential basis, footpaths and cycle lane would also be constructed, he said.


The road from Pandeshwar to Mangala Devi will be concretized under the government policy ‘Tender Sure,’ he informed.
