MANGALORE, January 21: The Jail Bharo agitation organized by the CPI(M) in front of the Deputy Commissioner’ s office in the city on Thursday as part of the state level movement organized by the party to protest against the ‘anti-people’ policies of the state government as well as the ration card discrepancies, turned violent when several of the agitators tried to rush inside the DC office building shouting slogans. The police had a tough time in chasing them away. Several activists were also arrested for barging into the DC office building.
Earlier, CPI (M) activists took out a procession upto the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Addressing the protest meet, Madhava, State Secretary of CPI (M) accused the BJP government in the state of being anti-people and added the government had also failed to fulfill the needs of the poor. Commenting on the ration card discrepancies, he said still there were several poor families that have not received the ration cards despite the government saying otherwise. He also warned of a severe protest if the state government failed to provide ration card to all eligible beneficiaries.
Muneer Katipalla said the government which had promised to provide rice at lower rates for the poor, has so far not fulfilled the promise though several other states have done so.
