Mangaluru, Nov 14, 2014: Residents of Jokatte staged a protest against the MRPL on November 13, Thursday to condemn the release of effluents from the plant into a nearby stream. The protestors blocked the release of effluents into the stream by dumping mud sacks into the stream. The protest was organised under the aegis of the local Nagarika Horata Samithi.
Addressing the protestors, Muneer Katipalla, DYFI leader charged the MRPL of failure to ensure the safety of people living in the vicinity of the plant. He also accused the MRPL officials of showing least interest in solving the problems faced by the locals due to the plant.
Even the district administration has not bothered to come to the rescue of the locals, he alleged and warned of severe protest if the appeal to solve the problem went unheeded.
Several women too were part of the protest. Though some officials of MRPL tried to convince the protestors that the leakage was not deliberate but was due to a mechanical error, the protestors were in no mood to hear their version.
