Mangalore, March 14: The Karnatak Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) at Thevu, Munnooru Grama near Thokkottu, organized a meeting of the beneficiaries of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in Munnooru on March 14, Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Secretary of the DK Zilla Panchayath Muhammed Nazeer said that the country will progress only when the NREGA is fully utilized.
He declared that development of rural areas is synonymous with the development of the country, adding that NREGA will lead to overall development because it creates employment. Lauding the efforts of the villagers of Munnuru, Nazeer said that they have accomplished work worth Rs 1,600,000 within just few months. He said that Munnoru has become an ideal village thanks to the successful utilization of NREGA.
NREGA, a government scheme that guarantees jobs, was implemented on August 25, 2005. The scheme guarantees 100 days of employment per financial year for adult members of rural families, who are willing to do unskilled manual labor at the minimum wage of Rs 60 per day. The central government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 39,100 crore during the financial year 2009 – 10. NREGA was implemented in DK in 2008.
