Mangalore, Sep 19, 2011 : KSRTC has stopped its Mangalore to Bajpe Airport Volvo air-conditioned bus service.
The service was introduced on July 15 with plans for expansion based on demand; however, the service had to be cancelled immediately because of several issues.
The KSRTC had introduced 2 buses, the second a month after the launch of the first, but planning a schedule that coincided with the departure and arrival of planes at the airport proved to be too difficult. Moreover, the bus service was available only during the day and passengers arriving or taking off during the late night hours were not benefited.
The taxi drivers’ association was also opposed to the Volvo buses right from the beginning because of the competition. The airport was witness to several altercations between taxi drivers and the Volvo employees.
The service had to be cancelled because there weren’t enough commuters to rake in a profit and the buses were running on loss. Air passengers simply did not use the buses in spite of reduced rates and the introduction of terminal points at the railway station.
The KSRTC, therefore, sees no sense in continuing the service.
