Mangaluru, April 13, 2025: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday announced the inclusion of Kambala, the traditional buffalo race of coastal Karnataka, in the Dasara sports meet from this year.
Speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the second edition of the Gurupura Kambalotsava, a night-time Kambala event held at Manibettu Guthu fields in Gurupura, Shivakumar emphasized the need to preserve the cultural heritage of the coastal region.
"Kambala embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and showcases our rich traditions. Our government is committed to encouraging this unique sport and promoting it internationally. From next year, it will be a permanent feature of the Dasara sports events," he said.
Highlighting the region’s tourism potential, Shivakumar stated that Dakshina Kannada’s vast coastline and cultural wealth could boost religious and cultural tourism. He assured government support for the promotion of Kambala and the preservation of the region’s heritage.
