Karkala: Sambar deer poaching case; involvement of 10 people suspected

Karkala, December 11, 2024: It is suspected that a group of ten people are involved in the case of poaching a huge Sambar Deer by shooting it dead in the Kudremukh reserve forest area.  Locals say police have registered cases against only two persons though ten were involved.

The incident took place on October 28 at Houthottu in Naxal hit Kutlur village of Belthangady taluk. The Sambar deer was butchered in the house of Sandesh Poojary and then sold in the chicken shop of Radhakrishna Poojary for Rs 1000 per kg, it is alleged.

The issue over the sale price of the meat and the difference of opinion among locals ultimately brought this poaching case to light.

Forest officials have presently registered case against Sandesh Poojary and Radhakrishna Poojary. However both are absconding.
