Karnataka Science & Technology Academy Life Time Achievement Award conferred on Dr.Iddya Karunasagar

Mangaluru, May 02, 2022: The Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) Bharathratna Dr C.N. Rao Lifetime Achievement award for the year 2021 has been conferred on Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor, Nitte University.

 

The Award in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Medicine) consists of gold medal, citation, honorary Fellowship of the Academy and Rs 1.0 lakh. The award was presented by Padmashri Dr. S. Ayyapan, Chairman, KSTA on 29 April, 2022 in KSTA. The award recognizes the four decades of outstanding scientific contributions made by Dr. Iddya Karunasagar that covered wide areas comprising aquatic animal health; food safety and risk assessment; development of molecular diagnostics; antimicrobial resistance in One health; vaccines, immunostimulants and probiotics in aquaculture, marine biotechnology bacteriophage therapy and marine toxins.

Dr. Iddya Karunasagar has developed and commercialized PCR diagnostic for whitespot virus of shrimp, which was recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India with Biotechnology Product and Process Development Award in 2002.

Dr. Iddya Karunasagar has 6 patents and three commercialized technologies. He was associated with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations for about two decades and served in the FAO, Rome for close to a decade where he played key role in several FAO/WHO food safety risk assessments that provided scientific advice to the international standard setting body, the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Currently he is serving as Member of WHO Advisory Group on Critically Important Antimicrobials in human medicine and as Advisor to Nitte University, Mangalore.
