Karnataka plans island development to boost tourism and jobs under New Maritime Policy

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, January 19, 2025: Karnataka is looking to harness the untapped potential of its coastal and riverine islands to boost tourism and employment under its newly launched Karnataka Maritime Development Policy. The policy, which came into effect on January 1, 2025, focuses on sustainable and comprehensive maritime sector development, replacing the Karnataka Minor Ports Development Policy of 2014.

The state has identified 13 locations for maritime infrastructure development, including Karwar, Belekeri, Malpe, Padubidri, and Old Mangalore Port. With 106 islands dotting its 320-km coastline, Karnataka aims to transform these islands into tourism and economic hubs. According to the Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB), the state’s islands include one inhabited accessible island, 46 accessible uninhabited islands, and 56 inaccessible uninhabited islands, along with several unnamed rocky formations.

To guide this transformation, the KMB will prepare an “Island Master Plan of Karnataka,” outlining infrastructure development for transportation, utilities, and facilities. The plan aims to position Karnataka’s islands as key destinations for tourism and ancillary economic activities.

The policy highlights several iconic islands, such as Netrani, St. Mary’s, and Ankola Koorve, for potential development. It also proposes offering cruising and houseboat experiences on rivers like Kaveri, Krishna, and Tungabhadra, catering to both domestic and international tourists.

In a bid to attract high-spending travelers, the government is planning to develop luxury coastal resorts, floating amusement parks, and other premium attractions.

Beyond tourism, the policy focuses on greenfield port development, fisheries, industrial growth, and renewable energy initiatives, such as near-shore wind farms. Additionally, the state aims to establish coastal economic zones (CEZs) for petrochemicals in Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts under the central government’s Sagarmala project.

“The thrust of the Maritime Development Policy shall be to encourage effective private participation and speedy implementation of projects,” the policy emphasizes.

With coastal tourism gaining momentum, the new policy is expected to unlock economic opportunities and enhance the maritime sector’s contribution to Karnataka’s growth.
