Mangaluru, July 2, 2023: Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament for Dakshina Kannada, directed Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan on Saturday, July 1, to organize a meeting with the relevant departments and address issues related to utility shifting within a week. This action is necessary to facilitate the construction of flyovers at Karnataka Polytechnic Junction and Nanthoor Junction on National Highway 66 in the city.
Speaking at the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting, Kateel emphasized the importance of resolving all utility shifting problems within a week, with the aim of commencing the two projects within a month.
During the meeting, a representative from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) stated that the drinking water and electricity supply lines at the two junctions need to be relocated before initiating the projects. Additionally, some trees will need to be either cut down or transplanted. (Meanwhile, the Forest Department has scheduled a public hearing in the city on July 10 regarding their proposal to remove 232 trees and transplant 370 trees along a 1.6 km stretch between the two junctions for the construction of flyovers and service roads.)
The NHAI representative provided updates on other ongoing projects as well. The four-lane project between B.C. Road and Periyashanthi stretch on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway has reached 31.41% completion, with 14.20 km of the 48.48 km stretch now ready. The project is expected to be completed by May 2024.
Regarding the four-lane project between Periyashanthi and Adda Hole stretch on the same highway, it has reached 61.71% completion, with 8.5 km of the 15.13 km stretch ready. This specific project is projected to be finished by the end of this year.
The NHAI representative also mentioned that 34% of the flyover project at Kalladkka on the same highway has been completed, with an anticipated completion date of May 2024.
Referring to the Bikarnakkata (Mangaluru)-Moodbidri-Sanur (Karkala) highway project, the official informed that 10 km of the 48 km-long widening project has been finished.
Kateel urged both the NHAI and the National Highway (under the Public Works Department) to prevent the unauthorized establishment of petty shops and bus shelters along the highways.
