Mangalore Aug 21: The Konkani Association of St. Aloysius College (autonomous) celebrated Konkani Manyata Divas on Aug 21, Saturday.
Gurkaar of Mandd Sobhann Eric Ozerio was the chief guest of the occasion. In his inaugural address, he called upon the Konkani-speaking communities to work for the development of Konkani language, which has a long and eventful history.
Labeling Konkani as a “secular language,” he said that the language is spoken by people of all religions. He expressed his unhappiness over the fact that people speak to their children in English, a practice that has led to the development of Konglish, a mixture of English and Konkani. He stated that celebrating Konkani Manyata Divas annually will not serve any purpose if the people of the community do not speak Konkani. He appreciated the Konkani Association of St. Aloysius College for its great work in developing the language.
Avina Mendonca, the Konkani writer, said that the younger generations hardly know Konkani words and urged them make an honest attempt to speak pure and perfect Konkani.
Gladys Rego and Nevil D’Souza, the secretary of the Konkani Association, were also present.
