World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is celebrated on 14th October to raise awareness of the public regarding the role of palliative care in the management of patients with cancer and other terminal illnesses and to discuss the problems and issues faced by the patient and various options available to patients following diagnosis of terminal illness. This year’s theme calls for the continued need to raise awareness among our communities and continue are support to our communities and each other.

“Palliative Care is a shared responsibility. Not only does it improve the quality of life for people facing terminal illness and death but it also encompasses the health and well being of caregivers which includes grief and bereavement support. Compassionate communities help patients and caregivers as they experience death, dying, care giving and grieving. With an ageing population and increased prevalence of cancer and other chronic conditions, the provision of palliative care is the need of the hour. It is our duty to increase access to palliative care for our community,” said Dr Sushil Jathanna, Director, Lombard Memorial (Mission) Hospital, Udupi. The program is sponsored by Giants International, Brahmavar.

Lombard Memorial (Mission) Hospital has started various community based projects for the elderly, the sick and dying in our community by providing a range of services catering to their needs. It currently provides three independent units “Sahajeevana”, a senior citizens home for the elderly who are mobile, “Karunalaya”, a geriatric nursing care unit for the elderly for bedridden and disabled patients and “Vatsalya”, a palliative care unit for patients with cancer and terminal illnesses.
