Mangaluru, February 28, 2025: The Mangaluru City Corporation council in its last meeting of the current five-year tenure on Thursday decided to hand over the cleanliness and maintenance of Gujjara Kere to the managing committee of Halekote Mariyamma temple at Bolara.

Gujjara Kere is a large waterbody spread over three acres at Jeppu, near Mangaladevi temple. It has been renovated under the Smart City mission by Mangaluru Smart City Ltd.

An agenda tabled in the meeting of the council said that the executive officer of the temple through a letter requested the corporation that its managing committee will maintain the cleanliness of the waterbody.

Among the nine conditions imposed by the corporation for handing over the maintenance are that no advertisement boards or hoardings should be displayed around the waterbody. The maintenance cost will have to be borne by the committee.

Playground maintenance

Amid objection by the Opposition Congress members, the council decided to hand over the cleanliness and maintenance of a playground at Santosh Nagara, Pachchanady ward, to Veera Savarkar Friends, a youth organisation.

Objecting to the decision, Congress member A.C. Vinayraj maintained that Veera Savarkar Friends is not a registered organisation and the corporation should not hand over the maintenance to it. He said that the corporation is capable of maintaining the playground.

The member representing the same ward Sangeetha Nayak said that the organisation can be handed over the responsibility to clean and maintain it.

Mayor Manoj Kumar said that there is no specific rule that the cleanliness and maintenance should be handed over only to a registered organisation. The civic body elsewhere in the city has handed over the cleanliness and maintenance to other organisations.
