MLA Vedavyas Kamath accuses Congress-led Karnataka government of not releasing funds for Corporations

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, December 27, 2024: Mangalore City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath accused the Congress-led state government of not releasing funds during the year to various Corporations coming under the Department of Backward Classes Development. He stated, "As a result, some Corporations are unable to sanction loans for self-employment to any beneficiaries."

He said "In my constituency, the target is only 20 beneficiaries for loan facilities for self-employment under D Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Development Corporation, six beneficiaries under the Nijasharana Ambigara Chowdaiah Development Corporation, and 14 under the Madiwala Machideva Development Corporation. However, no physical targets have been set for sanctioning loans to take up self-employment under the Savitha Samaja Development Corporation, Alemari Are Alemari Abhivridhi Nigama, Vishwakarma Community Development Corporation, Vokkaliga Community Development Corporation, Uppara Development Corporation, Maratha Community Development Corporation, and Arya Vaishya Community Development Corporation. It is not possible to respond to the queries of applicants,” he told media persons.

The successive governments in the state have established separate development corporations for the welfare and empowerment of socially, economically, and politically backward communities. Under the Department of Backward Classes Welfare, several corporations are operational. The previous BJP government had released over Rs 1,000 crore for the development of backward classes. However, after the Congress government came to power, not only has it failed to release funds, but it has also issued orders to cancel the funds released during the BJP’s tenure, which is highly condemnable. This is seen as a conspiracy to keep the backward classes from progressing, despite coming to power under the name of AHINDA, and is an injustice to the AHINDA community.

He questioned, "Why are the leaders of backward classes within the Congress silent on this issue?" He also criticised the government for unilaterally cancelling the grants approved for community halls, associations, and student hostels by the Department of Backward Classes Development, making it impossible to continue many ongoing projects in our district.

The MLA said "Neither president has been appointed, nor funds allocated for the Brahmashree Narayana Guru Development Corporation. Those who marched for the setting up of the Corporation have also remained silent. The situation is similar in the case of Bantara Development Corporation."

In Dakshina Kannada, development works related to Devadiga, Kudubi, Mogaveera, Billava, Shettigar, and other backward communities, have been neglected. The government is using all funds for guarantees. Additionally, over 6,000 students from backward classes in the state have applied for educational loans from various Corporations. Yet, not a single penny has been released, causing injustice to these students, alleged Kamath.
